There's a distinct lack of true rock 'n' roll clubs in London these days. Thus, it's a curious thing that there's no shortage of diehard rock 'n' roll fans, as witnessed last week at Danko Jones' warm-up gig for Ozzfest.
There were three distinct breeds of Londoner in attendance that night. 1) The giggly girls singing along, dancing as if they could have been watching Rod Stewart in Hyde Park; 2) A vast wall of onlookers raising pint after pint in appreciation. This group would have been hanging over the stage if not for, 3) The collection of pierced punks and hooligans making their own personal fight club in the front.
Demure in button-down black and sporting their trademark barely there hairstyles, Danko & Co. launched into 60+ minutes of earsplitting, no-nonesense rock 'n' roll and won over the crowd early on. One of the aforementioned fight club members was so involved in the performance, he failed to notice the large, heavily bleeding headwound he received during the second song, "My Time Is Now." More proof that rock is the best aphrodisiac AND painkiller? Or perhaps it was the booze... I digress.
Beer. Blood. Baldness. Three perfectly valid aspects of any Danko Jones show. But what about the music, maaaan? Of the 15+ songs, eight were showcased from the upcoming album, Born A Lion, including the single, "Sound Of Love." Fans will be pleased to note that these guys have not strayed at all from their classic formula, consisting of riffs catchy enough to make Angus Young proud and lyrics raunchy enough to make Ted Nugent blush.
So, with the London Ozzfest under their belt last Saturday, Sweden's Roskilde Festival on June 28 and a massive European tour underway, it's business as usual with Danko Jones. And if their London show is any indication, business will be very good. These boys love to play live and it shows.
